I've always found this monument fascinating. There was to be no monuments for an individual. When you tour Shiloh you will see no busts or equestrian monuments. Nothing that glorifies a general about the common soldier. But then you come across this monument. Its technically for the 19th Alabama but its really for Joseph Wheeler. I've always wondered how this came to pass, did the commissioners decide that since it didn't have a bust it was okay? Did they make the side that only says "Wheeler" face away from the road for that reason or was that the plan all along? It is located along the Hamburg-Savannah Road on the west side of Cloud Field.
